John Tenniel produces 42 wood engraving illustrations for the book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. These were printed in entirely black and white meaning accurate mark making was crucial to create a high quality image. These two images portray the characters in a detailed mesmerising method, giving the reader a full understand of the story they can embrace. John Tenniel uses a combination of linear parallel lines and soft rounded lines. Dark shapes are also used to add contrasting details. The dark lines use the contrast to add depth and shape to the characters and setting. The body language of these characters suggests the personality; the playing cards seem comical and dim-witted, Alice shows her curiosity and naivety. The facial expressions of the playing cards adds further to the characters emotions and gives you suggestions of their thoughts. These playing card figures are interacting in the scene not only with each other but with the environment as well.
